A poignant reflection from http://robs-random.blogspot.com/ … thanks Rob!
“It’s crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we’ve heard so that we don’t drift off.” (Hebrews 2:1, MSG)
I love my kids, but they have the attention span of a gnat, and the short term memory of a fruit fly. Maybe I’m the only parent who deals with this, but I just gravels me to be talking to my kids and about 30 seconds in, I start to lose them. First, they break eye contact. Next, the eyes wander to anything other than me. Finally, the eyes lock onto something, glaze over, and they’re gone. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say “Look at me” when I’m talking to them.
They also seem to not be able to find anything without my help. Here’s a typical exchange:
| “Dad, where’s my shirt?”“It’s right there on the table.”
“I can’t find it.” (Standing next to the table) “It’s right there on the table.” “I don’t see it. It’s not there.” (Looking everywhere but the table) “I can see it. IT’S ON THE TABLE.” “Where?” (spinning around and looking right at it about 20 times) “IT’S RIGHT THERE.” “Dad, I can’t find it. It’s not here.” (Exasperated, I walk out and pick it up off the table and show it to them) “Oh, there it is! Thanks, Dad!” |
As I read the verse above this morning, I realized that sometimes I’m the same way with God. Often, He puts things right in front of me, but I’m so preoccupied with other things, I can’t see them. I need to “keep a firm grip” on what He’s taught me so I don’t lose my focus on following Him and “drift off”.
I guess next time, I’ll be a little more patient with the kids.
