Leadership is not a title …

managers-and-leaders

… great prayer found by Silly Belf.

Dear Lord, please help me -

To accept human beings as they are -
not yearn for perfect creatures;To recognize ability – and encourage it;

To understand shortcomings – and make allowance for them;

To work patiently for improvement -
and not expect too much too quickly;

To appreciate what people do right -
not just criticize what they do wrong;

To be slow to anger and hard to discourage;

To have the hide of an elephant and the patience of Job;

In short, Lord, please help me be a better boss!

Thursday Morning ReDirect

Hey fellas – it has come time to revamp and re-purpose our morning gathering at McDs. Looking back 5 years when McIlrath and Gebhardt began this little exercise in the wee hours, I find it amazing that it’s still humming along and so many great men have been involved.

I’m writing to whom I believe to be the current core of this group. Numbers have been dwindling and occasionally, a soldier has been left alone at breakfast. How can we redirect and ensure this doesn’t happen? What does that look like (to quote McDave)?

I’d like you to read through my ideas and come on Thursday with your own. Here’s my vision:

The purpose:

  • Remain unscripted but with a purpose on our minds, speech and hearts.
  • Finish the play on recoil (for those that missed the mens retreat, we can explain.)
  • Start at home.
  • We can’t decide for our wives to see our point of view but we can decide to see their view.
  • Accept that we’re the stronger vessel – meaning we’re built to handle most of the load.

The execution:

  • Learn to say ‘no’ so you’re not over committed elsewhere.
  • Saturate yourself in scripture.
  • Correct personal problems.
  • Take notes on how to love your wife based on her feedback.
  • 752.

The check-up (Thursday mornings):

  • Let’s give each other a chance to succeed by sharing one example of our trials from working through the execution.
  • Come prepared to talk about that one thing.
  • Pray for our lost friends aloud – write them down on paper, pray and retro each week as God works through us.
  • Bring a friend – lost, saved or on their way.

Who’s going to be there to kick us off? I commit to you that I will be there.

Forward this to any dude you like …

All the best, jerry

Not my words, but good words.

A poignant reflection from http://robs-random.blogspot.com/ … thanks Rob!

“It’s crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we’ve heard so that we don’t drift off.” (Hebrews 2:1, MSG)

I love my kids, but they have the attention span of a gnat, and the short term memory of a fruit fly. Maybe I’m the only parent who deals with this, but I just gravels me to be talking to my kids and about 30 seconds in, I start to lose them. First, they break eye contact. Next, the eyes wander to anything other than me. Finally, the eyes lock onto something, glaze over, and they’re gone. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say “Look at me” when I’m talking to them.

They also seem to not be able to find anything without my help. Here’s a typical exchange:

kids-driving-crazy_

“Dad, where’s my shirt?”“It’s right there on the table.”

“I can’t find it.” (Standing next to the table)

“It’s right there on the table.”

“I don’t see it. It’s not there.” (Looking everywhere but the table)

“I can see it. IT’S ON THE TABLE.”

“Where?” (spinning around and looking right at it about 20 times)

“IT’S RIGHT THERE.”

“Dad, I can’t find it. It’s not here.”

(Exasperated, I walk out and pick it up off the table and show it to them)

“Oh, there it is! Thanks, Dad!”

As I read the verse above this morning, I realized that sometimes I’m the same way with God. Often, He puts things right in front of me, but I’m so preoccupied with other things, I can’t see them. I need to “keep a firm grip” on what He’s taught me so I don’t lose my focus on following Him and “drift off”.

I guess next time, I’ll be a little more patient with the kids.

Another one bites the dust.

I’ve decided to move this blog to my own servers. So in a few hours, http://jerrywelch.name will be the new home of http://mylifeinrockwall.blogspot.com.

jerrywelch.name has always been forwarded to this Blogger Blog, but now will be the only way to direct yourself to my site.

Here’s the links to the old posts covering the renaming history and some transom links:
